Feb. 27

Well its laundry day here! I haven't done much of anything today. We have our PT assessment tomorrow. I'm goin to do it but it'll suck. After the PT test test, we have a FTX (field training exercise).. 3 nights in the field. My knee pain will suck after the run, especially if I have to march too. If it is not required, then I'm going to ride in the truck. We finish white phase this week and begin blue phase (I believe)So I should get to call you soon! : )

During this FTX we finish BRM. We shoot a fully automatic machine gun, we do night fire with tracer rounds (rounds tipped with depleted uranium) and I think grenades. The important thing is we qualify with the m-16. I guess I'm hoping for sharpshooter
4 days and 3 nights of MRE's is going to suck!! MRE's are good but not filling. I'll write you when I get back from the FTX and let you know how I did in the PT test. Don't forget..I can't send mail for 4 days, so again you'll have a streak with no mail. I'm going to try to write you but it obviously won't get sent until probably Thursday. We'll probably get mail in the field at least 1 day...last bivouac we did.

Goodnight!

Feb. 26: a platoon story

I went to sick call today to more ibuprofen for my knees(mainly my right one). It was a slow day today. After sick call, we had combatives unil lunch. That was fun actually. First it was like a review of all the moves they've taught us. Then we formed up by platoon and had interplatoon mathes. Them we picked our campions. Out platoon won 3 matches which I believe was the best of the other 2 platoons...once again the other 2 platoons Renegades (or as we call them Renemaids) and NightRangers (or as we call them NinthGraders)will team up and gang up against us before even asking about an aliance with us.

I have to say I saw a rather amazing thing today within my platoon. We "owed" DS D 25 pushups. Also every time we fall out from formation we are required to do 15 pushups (to help the fatbodys with the PT test). Well the platoon guide (aka PG, which is one of us assigned by the DS)falls us out we drop and do our 40 and we go to get back up and one kid. McGovern*is still doing them. PG tells everyone they can't leave until everyone is done. So I go by McGovern and ask how many he has . He says 15, so I get in the pushup position along with another kid. Pretty soon, everyone is back down doing McGovern's pushups with him. It was actually kind of neat! Don't misread this though..yes that was a team moment, but they are guys here that if we just let them comingle for 10 minutes they would try to kill each other. It was still neat though.

Did I tell you that there is one person in my latoon with my same MOS? His name is Blanchard from the home of John Kerry.. has the accent and everything. He's a pretty cool guy. We're definitely more of a team, maybe even family. We're here .. we have to do this together whether we like each other or not.

Hae I told you I weih 150 lbs now. I have gained 12 pounds since first arriving. All the skinny guys are gaining...and the fatbodies are losing weight. I'm not worried about the PT test anymore. We will have quite a few in our platoon fail it. I'm guessing mainly the un will fail most people. We have up to 7 to 10 No Go's (failures). As long as I pass, I could care less.

I'm going to have to work on stopping cursing again. I swear a lot. People have even commented on it. I'm sure it's like at the bakery.

Remember, I told you about Blanchard...well he's already got a list of bars to visit on base when we get there (Sheppard AFB). I told him that we will have to go to one and do some drinking. I'm sure after 10 weeks, one beer will knock me down.

We have 2 recycled guys in our platoon now..they are from last cycle. They didn't graduate because they failed their PT Test. Get this...one failed by 5 pushups and the other failed his run 30 seconds. Not gonna be me!!!!

My letters are fewer now, I know, I'm sorry. I can barely stay up at night. Everyone is so tired now!!! I hate not writing you all of the time. Although it does make it easier for subject matter. The weekend, sundays especially, suck cuz we have time to think. In BCT, when you have time to think you only think of one thing....HOME!

Goodnight

Feb 23rd and 24th

We just got back from about a 3 miles march. We pretty much range walked (fast walk) back to the barracks. I was almost the last in line (we march in 2 single file lines) By the time we finished i was 14th from the front. The March was to and from the rifle range. We practiced on pop targets at 75, 150 and 300 meters. We had 40 shots. I hit 33 times out of 40 which would make me a sharpshooter if we were qualifying. We qualify next week but that is with the popup targets that change all ober the place. It was a lot more fun shooting today! Tomorrow we are dong the same thing. Next weekend (Saturday) hopefully I'll be better by then.

Sorry for the gap in the letters..I'll try not to neglect ya again!

Feb 20th : PT and stupid people!

Well we had a remedial PT session last night. We exercised for an hour last night. We did pushups and variations thereof and situps as well. We ran too! So I'm sore in the chest, shoulders, knees, back and i'm sick too. I have a sore throat and am sick. Believe it or not, I'm ok. Considering all we've down this week, I'm just glad that I'm this far along. NOw we move onto M-16's, Grenades, and all of that fun stuff.

Tell MawMaw, your dad and Pat I said Happy Birthday! Sundays actually suck around here. They are very slow and boring. During the week, time goes by so fast. Sundays go on foerever.

I weighed myself again last night. I now weigh 151 lbs . Yup I've gained 12 pounds since i've been here. I am stronger. I feel stronger I don't reallly know if i look stronger, bigger or different. I'll let you be the judge of that!

I was supposed to call you tonight but some dickhead screwed us and now its tomorrow. Can you tell I'm mad? I've waited 3 three weeks to have an actual conversation with your I guess one more day won't kill me. Sorry I know i'm bitching..by the time you read this it will be all over and done with.

Its 2330 (1130pm) and I can't sleep...its so darn hot in this bay. I should have lost 10 lbs just weating in bed!! I also keep dream that the DS wants us to do stuff and wake up. Not too much longer!! Me and the guy across form have last fireguard duty tonight too. that means i'm up at 0330. I don't care I'm done in 40 days!!

Tomorrow is our first day of BRM! I'm sure we'll be hiking so I'be a hurting unit. I have no idea of what we will doing. Perhaps sighting our M-16s. W have 2 weeks of this stuff. A lot of the guys are excited but I just want to finish it . I just want to pass it and move on. I know after BRM is Blue Phase.! Blue Phase is the 15K and graduation!!

Goodnight,
Dan

Feb 19th : Gas Chamber & More!

Letter from Dan

(Saturday 2/19/05)

Well I had a good day today and yesterday! Yesterday was the gas chamber. It was so much worse than I thought it wold be First, they stick you in a "cold" room. This room is a test room to try out your mask and make sure it works. Before you go in you make sure you have a good seal then go in. Then while in the room you close your eyes and hold your breath and the lfit the mask off of your face for 10 secondsand then reseal it. In there, it isn't bad although you do get your first taste of the gas.

From that room, they send you into the "hot" room. They open the door and the gas just pours inas you walk through. The room si full of drill instructors. In this room if you try to bolt and leave, they will take you down with force (for the safety of everyone of course). Ok so i'm in the second group so I havent' seen anyone come out yet. Fot that i'm grateful. Then they pull 8 people forward on this white line. When they tell you to, you rip off your mask and recite the "solider's creed". So they call me up. DS D (drill sergeant) walks up and asks who it is. "Pvt Munson Drill Sergeant" to which he replies "ok". He wnts to see my reaction. " Take off your mask" Now I take a big breath and this thing off and exhale and inhale...all i can say "I am amer....." gag!!! This "CS" gas instantly knocks the crap out of you! Snot is puoring form my nose. I start to panic, i'm doubled over. I can't breathe (yes i can) I'm grabbing onto my battle buddy and look and he's no better than me! I look up with burning eyes and DS D is laughing his ass off. He keeps telling me to sound off but i jut gag on mucous.

Finally they start leading us out. We get out and it burns for 5 minutes afterward. I didn't puke!! Only a few people did. One kid from another platoon did. They got me on video so you'll see me staggering out with snot everywhere. Tammy, it beyond SUCKED!!

Today we had a 8K road march. My kees and shins hurt like a bastard but I made it. Also, today we had phase testing!! 13 tasks...very easy. I passed and we are no offically in white phase. We had squad leaders appointed and all that appointed today. The picked people that do nothing and introverts! It should prove interesting.

We start BRM (Basic RIfle Marksmanship) next week... 2 weeks with our M-16s. I'm starting to get excited about the prospect of finishing!! After white phase, we go into blue phase. Pretty much the last 2 weeks of Blue phase is nothing..just graduation preperation! Although we do have the 15K road march right before the end.

Well white phase affords more freedom and personal time. i get to call you tomorrow. We had shower drills tonight and people being loud and stupid. The Drills left at 1930 (730PM) and ever since people can't control themselves. A couple times of being smoked will settle people down. Also I'm sure that we'll go thru squad leaders like I go thru pop!

First Post!

2/20/05

Well here is the first post of our "official" family blog. For the next several weeks ( 5 to be exact ) it will mostly be posts about Dan and Basic Training at Ft. Sill. So having said that here goes... Thanks - Tammy

Well we had a lot of fun today (Saturday). I went to sick call for my knees but really so I wouldn't have to run. I need a break. Anyway, I get back and we are suppsed to have a wall locker inspectio. So most everyone worked on their locker until it was time for the inspection. (Now before I finish...when I clean do I do a good job? Do I fold the laundry maybe a little too good? LOL Ok on with the story...) Inspection starts... enter 8 Drill Sergeants (also referred to as DS). They , in no certain order, begin to toss everyon's wall locaker for "infractions" . My nemesis, DS O approaches my wall locker. I knew my stuff was going everywhere. He takes his finger and drags it across my little dresser in my wall locker. Even though I wiped 30 seconds before they got there, he began dumping the contents on the floor. He emptied my entir wall locaker on the floor. After our stuff was tossed, we got smoked (aka "corrective physical training")Then DS L tells us to take EVERYTHING we have down 2 flights of stairs. We get everything down there. Then they tell us we had 10 minutes to to put it all back upstairs. We did that. It was a freindly reminder of who was in charge and not to get comfortable. It was of course an exercise in teamwork, pre-planned from the beginning. Us old farts figure this out and the kids are going "wow, he's really pissed" LOL :) It was actually kind of fun chaos! I'm really frickin' tired though.

When I wake up on it will be Sunday (Feb 13th) Sundays are generally pretty nice. The DS's leave you alone. You do laundry and clean. Write letters of course and study. Our first phase test is next Saturday. It's 48 days till graduation! YEEHAW! : )

Goodnight - Dan

PS. - Sorry if I'm googy in this letter, I'm real tired! : )
